On June 2, 2025, Sharjah Airport formally welcomed Ethiopian Airlines’ first direct flight, launching a new era in the airport’s expanding global connection and part of a major expansion of its route network into Africa.
As more major airlines select Sharjah as a key operational hub connecting the Middle East and the African continent, this move underscores the city’s growing prominence on the regional and global aviation map. Senior officials and representatives from both parties attended a reception to greet the first flight.
Ethiopian Airlines now offers four weekly flights between Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Sharjah Airport on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Return flights to Addis Ababa depart Sharjah on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A Key Route Improving Africa’s Trade and Investment Connectivity
The Sharjah Airport Authority’s (SAA) chairman, Ali Salim Al Midfa, emphasised that the airport’s continuous efforts to broaden its destination network and link Sharjah with important growing markets are consistent with this strategic collaboration with Ethiopia’s national airline.
He pointed out that the airport’s ambitious expansion plan and development initiatives, which seek to increase overall passenger capacity to 25 million annually by the end of 2027, are driving the increased demand for both domestic and international travel.
