On Wednesday, Canada’s new foreign minister, Anita Anand, called for more efforts to reach a ceasefire with Hamas, the organisation in charge of the Palestinian enclave, and accused Israel of using the scarcity of food as a political ploy in its operation in Gaza.

Following the breakdown of a truce agreement that allowed thousands of aid trucks to enter the enclave, Israel has been enclosing the Gaza Strip since early March and has recommenced its military operation against Hamas.

“The ongoing exploitation of food as a political tool cannot be tolerated… The violence against Palestinians and Gazans in Palestine has resulted in the deaths of more over 50,000 individuals. “It is just not acceptable to use food as a political tool,” Anand told reporters prior to a cabinet meeting.

We must keep trying to achieve a ceasefire. We must guarantee a two-state solution, and Canada will remain committed to that stance. Local health experts say more than 52,900 Palestinians have been murdered in Israel’s campaign. According to relief organisations and international agencies, it has put Gaza in danger of starvation.

Israel claims that Hamas is causing hunger by taking aid intended for civilians and disputes the existence of a famine threat.
