After watching video of the Palestinian militant group freeing Israeli hostages over the weekend, which he likened to Holocaust survivors, President Trump declared on Sunday that he was growing impatient with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Days after calling for the removal of Palestinians from the enclave and for the U.S. to take control of it, Trump’s response to pictures of the three hostages, who looked thin when they were released on Saturday, raised new questions about the deal’s future before the remaining 76 hostages are released.
“They appear to have survived the Holocaust. They were in terrible shape. Trump told reporters on Air Force One en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl that “they were emaciated.I don’t know how much longer we can take that … at some point we’re going to lose our patience.
Gunmen led Or Levy, who was kidnapped that day from the Nova music festival, and Ohad Ben Ami and Eli Sharabi, who were captured from Kibbutz Be’eri during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, onto a Hamas podium on Saturday before being turned over to Israeli authorities.
In comparison to the 18 other hostages who had already been released under the truce, which was reached in January 15 months into the war, the three men seemed to be in worse shape. A large number of Israeli-liberated Palestinian captives have likewise seemed gaunt and malnourished.
The sight of the weak hostages was startling, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Saturday that it will be handled. Israel released the three men in return for 183 Palestinian inmates.
