According to Chinese authorities, a powerful earthquake that occurred Tuesday in one of Tibet’s holiest cities in the foothills of the Himalayas flattened hundreds of homes and killed at least 126 people.
About 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, was the epicentre of the magnitude 6.8 earthquake. Buildings in Bhutan, India, and neighboring Nepal were also shaken by the tremors.

Within the 800,000-person Shigatse region of Tibet, the effects were felt. The Panchen Lama, one of the most significant personalities in Tibetan Buddhism, has historically resided in Shigatse City, which serves as the administrative center for the province.

Tibet Fire and Rescue published video showing that many homes in Shigatse city were reduced to rubble. It revealed that one injured individual had been taken out of the wreckage of a destroyed house by rescue personnel.

Temperatures in the area had dropped to minus 6 degrees Celsius (21 degrees Fahrenheit) late on Tuesday and were predicted to plunge as low as minus 16 degrees Celsius (3 degrees F) overnight, further compounding the suffering of those left homeless.
