Fuelled by profound frustration over the unpopular war with Iran, anxiety over the high cost of living, and anger at Trump’s stewardship of the country, voters in conservative bastions who had propelled the president to his second term in office just two years ago swung dramatically toward Democrats. Kansas elected its first Democratic senator since the Great Depression nearly a century ago.
Democrats rejected the Senate candidate that Trump personally selected in South Carolina, a state that Trump won by nearly 18 points in 2024. In Texas, the largest Republican state, Democrats ended a decades-long losing streak in a seismic fashion by gaining a Senate seat and ousting three-term Governor Greg Abbott.
Following two years in which the Republican-controlled Congress rarely exercised its power to rein in Trump, the results will herald in a new era of divided government in Washington. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate minority leader, said the Senate map is undergoing a generational transformation that will significantly alter the United States. “Democrats are now obligated to fulfilll the promises that Americans made during the election.”
For the majority of the past decade, Trump has maintained an absolute control over his party, despite the fact that he is prohibited by the US Constitution from pursuing a third term. However, the new power dynamic in Washington may hasten his descent into lame duck status, as the 2028 presidential race garners attention and potential successors vie for political influence in a post-Trump era.
