Homes in northwest Reno, Nevada, were destroyed on Sunday by an out-of-control wildfire that jumped over fire vehicles and made it impossible for personnel to reach hot spots. Authorities asked over 90,000 people to evacuate as shifting winds made it difficult for firemen to contain the situation. At least six persons were hurt, including three civilians and three first responders. Authorities declared the fire to be “human-caused,” but they did not explain how they arrived at this judgment or whether it was started on purpose or by accident.
In the Peavine Peak region of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, where residences and businesses encircle the rocky slopes close to the California state border, the Hawk Fire started on Saturday and spread across 23 square miles (60 square kilometres) on Sunday. Containment was nonexistent. The “GO NOW” zone has grown to include the University of Nevada’s perimeter, prompting the evacuation of about 42,000 residents. There were 45,000 more people in the nearby evacuation warning area. Because changing and stronger winds were predicted to make the fire even more unpredictable, authorities advised people to be ready to stay away for several days.”Please leave as soon as you can,” urged Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam. As gusts forced flames through dry brush, personnel saw “extreme fire behaviour,” according to a Sunday nite update.According to the statement, “the fire is expected to continue making moderate to high intensity runs in pockets of dense fuels over the next 12 hours.”
