The four-month-long war in West Asia has disrupted the supply of petroleum, fertilizer, and food, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Wednesday, and pointed out that the impact of the conflict will continue in the Global South.
Prime Minister Modi at the G7 outreach summit in Evian said “The crisis in West Asia will continue to affect the Global South for a considerable period through disruptions in fuel, fertiliser and food supply chains. PM Modi is visiting Slovakia for two days and then flying to France to join the G7 outreach session as a guest country invitee.
“Developing countries need to be able to absorb these shocks, and sustain their economic resilience. Our international financial institutions should develop support mechanisms to help developing countries absorb these shocks,” the prime minister said while addressing the session “Reviving a Balanced, Shared and Sustainable Economic Growth for All”.This comes just a few hours ahead of PM Modi’s crucial meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of G7 conference. Trade negotiations and current tensions in West Asia are likely to figure in the talks.
The meeting comes days after three Indian sailors were killed in US military attacks on commercial vessels near Oman, a development that drew sharp objections from New Delhi. The issue is anticipated to feature heavily in the negotiations, as will the planned US-Iran deal and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
