In his eagerly anticipated manifesto on the quickly evolving technology, Pope Leo XIV called for the “disarming” of artificial intelligence on Monday and cautioned against the “new forms of slavery” that could arise from its development. In his first encyclical, which he delivered in person at the Vatican alongside AI specialists like the co-founder of the US behemoth Anthropic, Leo said that the “just war” theory—recently promoted by the Trump administration—was “outdated”.
The first US Pope raised concerns about AI-directed weapons, stating that it is “not permissible to entrust lethal” judgments to technology. The Pope has argued with the White House over the Iran war and its use of religion to justify combat. Due to its opposition to the use of its technology for mass surveillance or lethal autonomous combat, the American behemoth Anthropic, which has established itself as an ethical AI business, is now involved in a legal dispute with the US military. Leo emphasized that it was “important to reaffirm that the ‘just war’ theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated” without mentioning US President Donald Trump.
