In an effort to shield itself from the skyrocketing price of oil, Lufthansa’s airline company has canceled 20,000 flights. Lufthansa Group announced on Tuesday, 21 April that it will cancel flights over the next six months to save 40,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel, which it said had doubled in price. It claimed to have eliminated “unprofitable” short-haul flights run by its regional subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine, resulting in a 1% reduction in the group’s capacity this summer.

“Aviation is a low-margin industry,” stated Simon Calder, The Independent’s travel writer. Flights that were only somewhat profitable can turn into significant losses when fuel prices double. However, he stressed that passengers won’t experience too much disruption if a flight is canceled. Lufthansa operates two daily flights from Glasgow and three daily flights from Edinburgh to its main hub, Frankfurt. Passengers may be transferred to Edinburgh if one or both of the Glasgow flights are canceled. Similarly, Lufthansa flies early each evening from Birmingham to Frankfurt. Those travelers might be given the option to depart from London Heathrow or Manchester at roughly the same time.

He said, “Annoying, but not the end of your vacation.” The German flag airline Lufthansa, as well as its affiliates and subsidiaries, including Swiss, Austrian, ITA, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines, are all run by the Lufthansa Group. Munich and Frankfurt are the hubs of Lufthansa CityLine. The first 120 daily flight cancellations took effect on Monday and will continue till the end of May. Affected passengers have been informed, according to the airline. Additionally, the 27 Lufthansa CityLine planes have been permanently shut down by the group.
