We recently had the privilege of engaging in an insightful conversation with Mehdi Benzaari, a passionate executive with over 25 years of experience across energy, heavy industries, and industrial engineering. His professional journey spans diverse regions and sectors, from launching ventures to efficiently leading complex projects. Currently, leading as the Chief Operating Officer, Mehdi has consistently held senior roles across organizations.
Spark Behind the Journey
We started the interview by asking, “Could you start by telling us about your professional journey and what inspired you to enter this industry?”
Mehdi shared, “My professional journey spans more than two decades across industrial gases, energy, infrastructure, and large-scale operations, with leadership roles in global organizations operating across the USA, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. I have had the privilege of building and running complex industrial businesses, leading P&Ls, managing multi-billion-dollar capex programs, and structuring international joint ventures with global OEMs and institutional investors.
What drew me to this industry is the combination of real-economy impact and long-term value creation. Energy, industrial infrastructure, and manufacturing are not abstract sectors – they shape competitiveness, job creation, technological sovereignty, and ultimately, national development. More recently, the transition toward renewables, green hydrogen, and clean industrial value chains added a strong purpose to my work: building assets that are not only profitable, but also structurally important for the future economy.”
Leading A Business Efficiently
We then asked, “As a professional in this field, what are a few lessons that helped you lead teams and businesses?”
“Three lessons stand out. Firstly, clarity of direction beats brilliance of ideas. Teams perform when the strategy is simple, priorities are explicit, and decision rights are clear. Ambiguity kills execution.
Secondly, execution, focus, and discipline matter more than strategy decks. In industrial and infrastructure businesses, value is created in engineering, procurement, financing, and commissioning. Leaders must stay close to operations. What makes a difference is excellence in execution.
And thirdly, trust, compliance, and governance are not ‘soft topics.’ In joint ventures and partnerships, alignment on governance, incentives, and risk-sharing is as critical as the technical or commercial model. Strong governance structures prevent future crises,” Mehdi explained.
From Setbacks to Success
Challenges are a part of every journey. To learn how Mehdi Benzaari deals with challenging phases, we asked, “What do you see as a major challenge in starting a business or career, and how did you overcome it?”
He reflected, “One of the biggest challenges is navigating uncertainty and imperfect information. Early in one’s career or when building new ventures, decisions often need to be made without full visibility on outcomes, partners’ behaviors, or market timing.
I learned to overcome this by investing heavily in scenario thinking and downside protection, and building optionality into decisions rather than betting everything on a single outcome. I also surround myself with people who challenge assumptions rather than agree.
Progress in complex environments is rarely linear – resilience and adaptability are more important than initial perfection.”
Plans we asked Mehdi Benzaari
Intrigued to learn more, we asked Mehdi Benzaari to share a glimpse of the services or products he provides.
Mehdi Benzaari mentioned, “The focus is on scaling industrial platforms that combine technology, localization, and long-term operating excellence. This includes building manufacturing ecosystems, supply chains, and operational capabilities in emerging industrial clusters, particularly around clean energy technologies such as solar, wind, storage, and hydrogen.
Looking ahead, the ambition is to move from isolated projects to integrated industrial ecosystems – where manufacturing, logistics, R&D, and local talent development reinforce each other. This is how you move from ‘projects’ to sustainable industrial value creation.”
Impact of Technological Advancements
AI is everywhere today and is reshaping sectors. To understand Mehdi Benzaari’s perspective on AI, we asked, “What are your thoughts on this trend?”
“AI is not a silver bullet, but it is becoming a general-purpose productivity layer, similar to what electrification or the internet once were. In industrial and energy sectors, the most immediate value comes from predictive maintenance and asset reliability, supply chain optimization, engineering productivity, project controls, and decision support in complex capital allocation.
However, the real differentiator is not the technology itself – it is organizational readiness. Companies that succeed with AI are those with clean data, disciplined processes, and leadership that understands how to embed digital tools into core workflows rather than treating them as side experiments,” he commented.
Insights from an Expert
Addressing the aspiring professionals in his field, we requested Mehdi Benzaari to share some words of wisdom.
Mehdi Benzaari shared, “I would highlight four principles. Firstly, build depth before chasing titles. Early mastery of a domain creates long-term leverage. Learn how value is actually created. Understand cash flows, risk allocation, incentives, and operations – not just strategy. Excellence in execution makes the difference.
Secondly, choose environments where you can learn from complexity. Hard projects build disproportionate capability.
Thirdly, play the long game. Careers and businesses compound over decades, not quarters. Patience, reputation, and consistency matter more than quick wins.
And finally, no leader succeeds in isolation. Your impact is defined by the caliber of the team you build, the people you empower, and the environment you create around you.”
