Just after midnight on Thursday, Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as mayor of New York City at a historic, abandoned subway station in Manhattan.Mamdani, a Democrat, took the oath of office as America’s largest city’s first Muslim leader while placing his hand on a Quran. In a succinct address, Mamdani declared, “This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime.” The historic City Hall station, one of the city’s first subway stops and renowned for its magnificent arched ceilings, served as the venue for the private event, which was presided over by political ally New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The historic subway station was a “testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health and the legacy of our city,” Mamdani said in his inaugural speech as mayor. He also announced the nomination of Mike Flynn as his new commissioner for the Department of Transportation.
“Thank you all so much, now I will see you later,” the new mayor concluded, grinning and making his way up a set of stairs. One of the mayor’s political heroes, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, will swear Mamdani in once more in a grandiose ceremony at City Hall at 1 p.m.
The “Canyon of Heroes,” a section of Broadway well-known for its ticker-tape parades, will host what his office is promoting as a public block party after that.As one of the most watched politicians in the nation, Mamdani now takes on one of the most demanding roles in American politics.
