On the sidelines of Gitex Global 2025, a senior official from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) exclusively told Khaleej Times that the thorough study for the implementation of the city’s self-driving trackless tram system will be finished by the middle of next year, or as early as the first quarter of 2026.
To relieve traffic congestion and accommodate Dubai’s expanding population, trackless trams will be essential. According to Dawood Alrais, director of the Rail Maintenance Department at RTA’s Rail Agency, the eco-friendly, driverless electric public transportation system will be linked to the Dubai Metro and help Dubai reach its target of having 25% of its transportation be smart and driverless by 2030.
The trackless tram does not require fixed tracks, unlike conventional trams, such as the current Dubai Tram. With the use of clever navigation technologies including optical sensors, GPS (global positioning system), and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensing technology, it can follow a “virtual track” on the highway or any major street thanks to its versatility. Compared to traditional trams virtual tracks have a more minor environmental impact because no fixed tracks need to be built. Lower operating costs are also necessary to maintain it.
