The UN human rights director called on Thursday for $500 million in funding for 2025 to assist its work probing human rights violations around the world, from Syria to Sudan, saying that lives are at stake.

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated on Thursday in Geneva that the UN Human Rights Office has helped countries, national institutions, regional bodies, the UN system as a whole, and the private sector improve their performance by incorporating human rights into their operations.

He stated that up to 2,000 individuals working in 92 countries conducted over 11,000 human rights monitoring missions and witnessed nearly 1,000 prosecutions. He noted that 95 partners, including 67 UN member states, have contributed to the office’s activities and hoped for their ongoing support in 2025.

The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has been dealing with persistent funding difficulties, which many believe will be exacerbated by President Donald Trump’s cuts to US foreign aid.

According to the United States Agency for International Development website, US financing for OHCHR has gone to monitoring human rights breaches in northern Ethiopia following the 2020-2022 civil conflict and peace-building activities in Colombia.
