This week, heavy rains pounded the western Indian state of Gujarat, flooding cities, cutting off utilities, and forcing thousands of people from their homes. Authorities said on Thursday that at least 28 people had died as a result of the heavy downpours, and they warned of more to come.
Images from Reuters television showed people wading through waist-high waters that have partially submerged cars and roads as Army rescue teams joined the relief effort.
“It’s been without electricity for the past two days,” stated Prabhu Ram Soni, a resident of Jamnagar, a coastal city. “My mother suffers from asthma and requires oxygen support; we have an eight-month-old daughter.
According to district collector B K Pandya, Reuters, heavy rains are still falling in Jamnagar, which is home to Reliance’s largest oil refinery complex in the world.
Nayara Energy runs another refinery at Vadinar, which is supported by Russian organisations, including Rosneft, the country’s biggest oil producer.
When asked if the rain had affected work in the refineries, Pandya replied, “They are operational,” adding that authorities were concentrating on rescue efforts in the district.
