Iran declared on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz was an untouchable “red line” and threatened to target all infrastructure in the Gulf region if US President Donald Trump followed through on his threat to attack Iran’s infrastructure.

On Wednesday, the US resumed a fifth night of attacks and reinstated a naval blockade of Iran’s ports, which Washington claims is intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran closed last Saturday following the collapse of a precarious truce. “We are in an essential and existential war with America,” Tehran’s senior negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, declared in a statement following the initial attacks on Wednesday night.

Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia, a spokesman for the Iranian army, declared on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz, which prior to the war transported almost a quarter of the world’s oil and gas supplies, is a “red line” that Iran retains strict control over. The Americans believed they could seize control of this key passage by attacking several of our bases on the country’s southern shores, according to Akraminia.
