Following President Donald Trump’s decision to loosen sanctions on the war-torn nation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Syria’s foreign minister on Thursday to talk about normalising relations.
According to a State Department official, the senior US diplomat began negotiations with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani while attending a NATO foreign ministers’ conference in the Turkish resort of Antalya.
According to the person, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was among the other high-ranking Turkish officials who attended the private meeting. After years of impasse, Islamist militants led by Turkey launched a rapid onslaught in December that overthrew long-time leader Bashar Al Assad.
Since Assad’s reign, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have pushed for improved ties with the new Syrian administration and the removal of economic sanctions. Trump said he intended to offer Syrians “a chance at greatness” when he declared he would ease sanctions during a visit to Riyadh on Tuesday.
Throughout his Gulf tour, Trump, who is constantly aware of public opinion, has mentioned how he was given a standing ovation when he made the announcement in front of an investment gathering.
