Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has urgently deployed an Emirati search and rescue team from the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, the National Guard, and the Joint Operations Command to assist in operations following the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan. Alongside the rescue mission, the UAE has sent vital humanitarian aid, including food, medical supplies, and tents, to support injured individuals and families affected by the disaster.
This initiative forms part of the UAE’s rapid humanitarian response to natural disasters and crises, reflecting its global commitment to providing timely assistance and easing human suffering. It also underscores the nation’s determination to strengthen international cooperation through urgent relief efforts.
The 6.0 magnitude quake, which struck at midnight at a depth of 10 km (6 miles), has been described as one of Afghanistan’s deadliest in recent years. Authorities reported more than 800 fatalities and at least 2,800 injuries, with rescuers facing significant challenges in reaching remote mountainous areas due to difficult terrain and poor weather conditions. The disaster has further strained Afghanistan’s already limited resources under the Taliban administration, which is contending with dwindling foreign aid and the forced return of hundreds of thousands of Afghans from neighboring countries.
