The parent company of ChatGPT, OpenAI, plans to expand its presence in its second-largest user base by opening its first office in India later this year in New Delhi. According to a statement released to Reuters on Friday, Microsoft-backed OpenAI has become a legitimate firm in India and has started employing local staff.
In order to reach the almost one billion internet users in the most populated country in the world, ChatGPT announced its most affordable monthly package, priced at $4.60, just this week. India is a crucial market for the service.
In India, OpenAI is facing legal issues after being accused by book publishers and news organizations of exploiting their content to train ChatGPT without their consent. Any wrongdoing has been disputed by the corporation.
“We are committed to making advanced AI more accessible nationwide and to building AI for India, and with India,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement, adding that opening our first office and assembling a local team is a crucial first step.
In India, the business is up against fierce competition from rivals like Google’s Gemini and Perplexity, an AI startup. Both companies have introduced products that make their sophisticated plans free for a large number of users.
