According to US President Donald Trump, Xi Jinping assured him that China will not attack Taiwan while Trump is in power. In interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump made the remarks in advance of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
I will say this: you and President Xi of China and Taiwan have a lot in common, but as long as I am here, I don’t think it will ever happen. Trump stated, “We’ll see,” in an interview with Fox News’ Special Report. A request for comment was not immediately answered by the Chinese embassy in Washington.
In June, Trump and Xi made their first official announcement on Trump’s second term as president. In April, Trump also claimed that Xi had called him, although he did not say when.
China has pledged to “reunify” with the democratic and independently administered island, by force if necessary, and sees Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan vehemently rejects China’s claims to sovereignty.
The US, like the majority of nations, does not have formal diplomatic connections with Taiwan, despite Washington being the island’s primary international backer and arms supplier.
