Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur recalled a peculiar request made by the renowned vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan during the filming of “Bandit Queen.” The tragedy happened just after another musical genius, R D Burman, tragically passed suddenly. Shekhar shared the story with this Instagram family, stating, “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice was filled with tears.” The filmmaker went on, “Shekhar ji.. you look at your film and I will look into your eyes,” revealing what Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had asked for. And I’ll sing. They were working on the soundtrack for “Bandit Queen.” It was the aftermath of the Behmai Massacre. There were funeral pyres in a queue, and ladies on the riverside could be heard weeping in loud, rustic accents.
The “Mr India” creator said, “We turned the mikes on and I found Khan sahib looking… no, staring into my eyes, as if he could find my soul, and look deep into it,” describing what transpired when the microphone was turned on. He was also aware of my proximity to R. D. Burman.
I was stunned by his speech and gaze. I was taken to a far deeper world. He continued by saying, “Because Khan Sahib was bringing me nearer to God and into the realm where life and death blended into one.” “Look for the location of the Behmai Massacre aftermath if you ever meet Bandit Queen again.
