On Monday, a massive power outage caused widespread chaos in large areas of Spain and Portugal, prompting retailers such as the supermarket chain Lidl and the furniture giant IKEA to close their outlets. Companies were acting “to prevent panic buying and ensure the safety of all,” according to EuroCommerce, a trade group for the retail sector.

It further stated that stores were still attempting to determine the scope of the issue and collaborating with local authorities. According to a spokeswoman, Lidl initially closed its 630 stores in Spain but has now begun reopening some in the Basque region and other areas as power has been restored.

Despite having moved to generators at its larger locations and allowing customers who were already there to remain indoors during the crisis, IKEA temporarily closed its shops and pickup locations throughout Spain, according to franchisee Ingka Group.

If our customers and employees lack a means of transportation, we are allowing them to remain in our stores’, a spokeswoman said in a statement. The outage has grounded aircraft and crippled traffic. Portugal likewise saw the closure of all IKEA outlets.

Tendam, a Spanish clothing retailer, announced that it has shut down all of its stores in areas of Spain and Portugal that have lost electricity and sent all of its employees home to their headquarters in Madrid and Barcelona.
