As he embarks on a high-stakes diplomatic trip to the region’s main export-reliant economies, Xi Jinping has urged Vietnam to oppose “unilateral bullying” and support free and open trade in an effort to establish his nation as a dependable partner in contrast to the United States.

The Chinese leader landed in communist-run Vietnam on Monday and will visit Malaysia and Cambodia from Tuesday to Friday, two nations that have experienced an increase in trade and investment with China in recent years.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi discussed with Vietnam’s senior leadership on Monday that the two nations should cooperate to preserve “the stability of the global free trade system and industrial and supply chains.

Xinhua quoted Xi as saying that “China and Vietnam should strengthen strategic focus and jointly oppose unilateral bullying.” He also stated that “China’s mega market is always open to Vietnam.” Only by cooperating can we sail steadily and far, and a small boat with one sail cannot withstand the stormy waves,” he stated.

Southeast Asian countries, still recovering from the now-suspended US tariffs, are becoming more and more concerned about getting caught in the crossfire between the two biggest economies in the world as Washington and Beijing trade record-high duties.
