The Austrian builder of an Orlando amusement park ride was found liable for $310 million by the parents of a 14-year-old Missouri boy who died after falling from the ride in 2022.

Tyre Sampson’s parents, Yarnell Sampson and Nekia Dodd, were awarded $155 million apiece by the Orange County jury late Thursday. After plummeting 70 feet from the Orlando Free Fall attraction at Icon Park, he passed away on March 24, 2022. Funtime never showed up in court to defend itself, thus the trial was over in a day.

Sampson’s family and Icon Park had previously reached an undisclosed settlement. “The jury’s decision confirms what we have long argued: Tyre’s death was the result of blatant negligence and a failure to prioritise safety over profits.

The outcome on Thursday guarantees that the ride’s manufacturers will be held accountable for failing to protect passengers.

The family will now need to request an injunction from an Austrian court to obtain the damages. On Friday, Fu

ntime’s headquarters received an email requesting comment, but Funtime did not immediately reply.

According to the company’s website, it creates exhilarating experiences like Vomatron, Sling Shot, and Chaos Pendle that toss, drop, and spin riders at high speeds and from high altitudes.
