According to a study released on Thursday, people who have been exposed to more per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, which are present in food, water, and people through items like Teflon pans, waterproof clothes, carpets and fabrics that don’t stain, and food packaging, have worse kidney function.

Because they take a very long time to decompose once they build up in the environment or the human body, PFAS are frequently referred to as “forever chemicals.”

After analysing 78 patients, ages 17 to 22, the University of Southern California researchers demonstrated that PFAS alters the gut microbiota, subsequently impairing kidney function.Their findings, which were published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, demonstrated that up to 50% of the decline in kidney function four years later can be attributed to PFAS-induced alterations in the gut microbiome and associated metabolites.

Jesse A. stated, “Our findings are an important piece of the puzzle about the many different health risks of PFAS, which can allow policymakers to develop policies that protect the public from exposure to these chemicals.
