A Ukrainian publishing business that publishes works by Barack Obama and George Orwell reported on Thursday that it has lost almost 800,000 books as a result of the devastating Russian attack on Kyiv. The midnight bombardment, which killed at least 21 people and left others wounded, was one of the heaviest aerial barrages unleashed by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth year. Ukraine has often accused Moscow of attacking its cultural institutions on a daily basis, including museums, galleries, film studios, and Kyiv’s famous, Unesco-listed monastery from the eleventh century. One of the biggest publishers in Ukraine, BookChef Publishing, stated on Telegram, “The central warehouse of our logistics partner … where our books were stored was destroyed as a result of Russia’s nighttime attack.”Most of the print run – around 800,000 books – has been lost,” the publisher stated.

It uploaded images of the demolished structure, showing firefighters at the scene and smoldering rubble piles. According to the company, none of its employees were hurt in the assault. BookChef Publishing’s portfolio contains over 700 titles, including bestsellers by Yuval Noah Harari, Michelle and Barack Obama, Matthew McConaughey, Will Smith, George Orwell and Charles Bukowski.
