Late on Wednesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry hinted that Presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian would sign the agreement with the United States. For the two nations, whose diplomatic ties were severed in 1980 due to the US embassy hostage situation in Tehran, such a signing ceremony would be a significant step. Iranian state television cited Esmail Baghaei, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, as saying the statement. Pezeshkian was elected president on a pledge to improve ties with the West. But because hardliners have assumed control of the country’s theocracy, he has been marginalized for months following Iran’s mass murder of demonstrators in January and during the conflict.

After days of secrecy, senior US officials read the memorandum of agreement with Iran to reporters on Wednesday. Prior to the official signing ceremony scheduled for Friday, the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, read the document, which Iran has not made public. After visiting the G7 conference in Geneva, Donald Trump makes a gesture as he boards Air Force One at Geneva Airport on his way to Versailles.   The authorities claim that the draft agreement incorporates provisions to protect Lebanon’s “territorial integrity” following Israel’s most recent attacks on Hizbollah in Lebanese territory, as well as a new “minimum” requirement for downblending highly enriched Iranian uranium.

After the agreement is signed, the US will take steps to lift certain broad sanctions against Iran, but not completely remove them. According to the authorities, the US draft of the agreement also guarantees toll-free travel across the Strait of Hormuz for a mere sixty days, but it does not prohibit future payments. The agreement is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday. According to leaked versions of an interim deal that officials claim roughly matches the original, it also sees Iran receiving at least $300 billion to reconstruct after the conflict.
