Jeff Landry, President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, has started his first trip to the Arctic island in an effort to forge “friends” and strengthen ties. After getting off an official US aircraft in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Monday, Landry remarked, “I’m just here to build relationships, to look, to listen, and to learn.” However, some Greenlanders are ignoring Landry, and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has reiterated that his country is “not for sale” in response to Landry’s visit to the semi-autonomous region of Denmark.

The trip coincides with attempts to settle a diplomatic dispute that was brought on by the US president’s threat to forcibly acquire Greenland. Landry, the governor of Louisiana, traveled for a business summit and will be present for the opening of a new US embassy facility with a small entourage. An American physician is also traveling with him. He told Danish network TV2 that he had offered “to assess the medical needs” in Greenland, a decision that the nation’s Health Minister, Anna Wangenheim, deemed “deeply problematic”.

The government of Greenland vehemently opposed Trump’s February announcement that a US hospital ship would be sent to the island. Landry claimed that the US president had instructed him to “go over there, and make a bunch of friends” when he was designated as an envoy in December 2025.
