On Thursday, the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) commemorated World Heritage Day, which is recognized on April 18 every year, in a lively cultural setting that demonstrated its dedication to protecting cultural heritage and increasing public awareness of its significance. A varied program showcasing the diversity and civilizational aspects of human legacy was presented at the event. World Heritage Day, according to SIH Chairman Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, is a significant turning point in raising awareness of cultural heritage as a shared human legacy and national memory that needs to be conserved.

He emphasized Sharjah’s pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage and guaranteeing its transfer to future generations. He highlighted the institute’s ongoing programs including “Sharjah Heritage Days,” “The Narrator’s Forum,” and “Heritage Nights,” as well as academic collaborations and international involvement that bolster Sharjah’s standing as a major hub for culture and heritage worldwide. The ceremony, according to SIH Director Abu Bakr Al Kindi, illustrates the institute’s dedication to protecting cultural heritage and bolstering national identity.

He clarified that this year’s emphasis on kohl, a UNESCO-listed component, emphasizes its aesthetic and cultural significance. The historical, therapeutic, and aesthetic uses of kohl in Arab and Gulf culture were explored in a discussion session titled “Kohl: Eye Beauty and Eye Health.” Speakers discussed its historic applications, manufacturing processes, and importance in regional heritage customs. Discussions about kohl’s cultural meaning, its historical use, and its role in eye health were held, and participants commended Sharjah for its efforts to preserve heritage. Its UNESCO designation and ongoing significance in Gulf customs were also acknowledged by experts.
