Qatar reported on Wednesday that an Iranian missile had hit a tanker leased to its state-owned energy business in the territorial waters of the Gulf nation. Three cruise missiles were fired from Iran toward Qatar, according to a statement from the Gulf state’s defense ministry.

Qatar’s military “intercepted two of the cruise missiles, while the third missile struck an oil tanker leased to QatarEnergy in Qatar’s territorial waters,” it said. The defence ministry continued, “Coordination was established with relevant authorities to evacuate the tanker, which had 21 crew members on board, without any human casualties.”

Over the past month, Iran has repeatedly attacked Gulf nations with drones and missiles in retaliation for US and Israeli operations that started at the end of February. Iran has targeted shipping and hydrocarbon infrastructure in the oil-rich Gulf countries, so blocking the vital Strait of Hormuz, which typically carries one-fifth of the world’s oil.

The fuel oil tanker Aqua 1 was “the subject of a missile attack in the northern territorial waters of the State of Qatar in the early morning hours of Wednesday,” according to a statement from QatarEnergy.
