The bridge expansion project has increased the number of traffic lanes from three to four, boosting capacity from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, an increase of 33 per cent. The upgrade has significantly improved traffic flow towards the airport terminal, reduced travel times, and made journeys smoother for road users. The project forms part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s wider plan to strengthen Dubai’s road network and improve connectivity between key transport corridors and major facilities.

The expansion was delivered in close coordination with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, which oversees the planning and development of airport infrastructure across the emirate. This collaboration ensured that traffic solutions support both current operations and future growth at Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport for international passengers.

To add the extra lane, a new bridge was constructed using an advanced structural system that combines steel box girders with a composite concrete deck. This design was selected for its efficiency and for allowing faster construction without disrupting traffic on Airport Street or requiring temporary support structures beneath the bridge.
