Despite a defense request for Rodrigo Duterte’s release due to his advanced age and deteriorating health, the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided on Friday that the 80-year-old former president of the Philippines must stay in custody.
Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza, the presiding judge, stated at a hearing that the 80-year-old’s attorneys had not presented sufficient evidence to support a temporary release from jail in The Hague, the location of the court. Judge Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza, who presided over the Appeals Chamber, stated that the defense “failed to identify errors” in a lower court ruling that Duterte should remain in jail.
Duterte’s attorneys had requested a “humanitarian” parole due to his health condition, appealing an earlier denial. The court stated that “the conditions for release proposed were not sufficient to mitigate the risks it found in relation to Mr Duterte’s interim release.
The jury also “rejected the defence’s argument that Mr Duterte should be spared for humanitarian grounds. In March, Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, was detained and brought to The Hague for allegedly killing thousands of drug users and dealers during his war on drugs
