US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday, marking the first face-to-face encounter between the Republican president and the democratic socialist who won this month’s mayoral election. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Oval Office on November 21, Trump said in a post on social media Wednesday.
Mamdani and Trump have long been outspoken critics of each other. Trump publicly backed Mamdani’s opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, during the fiercely contested race. Mamdani, meanwhile, has condemned several of Trump’s key policies, including his administration’s immigration crackdowns and its response to protests against U.S. support for Israel during the Gaza conflict.
Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Mamdani said his transition team had reached out to the White House to organize the meeting. “My team reached out to the White House to fulfill a commitment I made to New Yorkers during this campaign,” he said on Monday. His campaign team, however, did not immediately comment on Trump’s post about the upcoming meeting.
