In an effort to promote peace in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump traveled to Israel to commemorate a ceasefire with Hamas that the US mediated. He then traveled to Egypt on Monday for a worldwide forum on Gaza’s future.

Trump is scheduled to say at the summit, “We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put the old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us, and to declare that our future will not be ruled by the fights of generations past,” according to White House transcripts.

The frantic journey, which included a speech earlier in the day in the Knesset in Jerusalem, comes at a precarious juncture in hopes of bringing an end to the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. It’s not feasible, everyone said. And that’s what will happen. Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi were joined in saying, “And it is happening before your very eyes.”

The meeting is being attended by about three dozen nations, some of which are from the Middle East and Europe. Benjamin Netanyahu was invited, but he turned it down because his administration claimed it was too near a Jewish holiday.
