The Gaza City healthcare system is under attack and being forced to the brink of collapse as Israeli troops close in. Airstrikes destroyed two clinics, two hospitals were closed after being damaged, and other facilities are hardly operating, with medicine, equipment, food, and fuel in low supply, over two weeks into Israel’s most recent ground offensive on Gaza’s major metropolis.
Only a few doctors and nurses remain to care for infants in incubators or other patients who are too sick to move after many patients and employees were compelled to leave hospitals. Health personnel say it is dangerous to come and go because of the shaking of hospital walls caused by bombing outside and the buzzing of Israeli drones that frequently fire close by. This past week, as Israeli forces drew in, the majority of the patients at the Al-Quds hospital, located on the southern outskirts of Gaza City, were hastily evacuated.
One patient was dropped off at a field of rubble by medics. According to Andee Vaughan, an American nurse who was one of the medics, he was covered with gauze for severe burns on 40% of his body and was instructed to find his way to a facility for treatment. In an interview the day she was evacuated as well, Vaughan declared, “It is insanity.” “That is the state of the healthcare system,” she claims, referring to the deliberate demolition by Israel.
