British Prime Minister Keir Starmer carried out a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle on Friday, appointing new deputies at the heart of his government after the resignation of Angela Rayner. Starmer promoted Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Deputy Prime Minister, handing the Foreign Office to Yvette Cooper, who until now served as Interior Minister. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood will fill Cooper’s former role. All three are regarded as trusted loyalists.
The reshuffle, deeper than expected, comes after Rayner was forced to step down following a ruling that she breached the ministerial code by failing to pay the correct tax. Starmer, under pressure to draw a line under more than a week of damaging speculation, said the changes strengthen his team at a crucial time.
Angela is a big beast and hard to replace,” one Labour lawmaker admitted, though they described the new appointments as “sound” choices, even if not headline-grabbing. Lammy’s move to deputy prime minister means surrendering the coveted role of foreign secretary, while Cooper’s promotion reflects her seniority within Labour, having served in Gordon Brown’s government. She had recently overseen the government’s migration policies, often the target of criticism.
