In Beirut on Monday, US special envoy Amos Hochstein stated that the United States was developing a plan to permanently resolve the dispute between Israel and the Lebanese military group Hizbollah and that simply adhering to a prior UN decision would not be sufficient.
The Lebanese state’s troops and weapons must be the only ones present in southern Lebanon, according to UN resolution 1701, which put an end to the most recent round of fighting between Israel and Hizbollah in 2006.
Hizbollah missile assaults on northern Israel in favour of the Palestinian organisation Hamas, which carried out a brutal killing spree in Israel from Gaza just over a year ago, were the culmination of ongoing cross-border hostilities. Israel launched a massive offensive against Hizbollah last month.
After Israel executed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week, Hochstein was in Lebanon for the second time in two months to hold discussions with Lebanese authorities as part of a fresh US mediation effort to bring peace to the Middle East.
Hochstein stated at a press conference that “it is not enough for both sides to merely commit to (UN resolution) 1701.”
The settlement served as a foundation for resolving the dispute, but other steps were required to guarantee that it was carried out “fairly, accurately, and transparently.”
