Priyanka Chopra, then in her teens, began her career in show business in 2000 after winning an international beauty pageant. She then went on to play several roles in Indian films. She made her American series debut with Quantico fifteen years after her Bollywood career began. Several additional Hollywood productions followed this.

Priyanka is one of the few Indian actresses who has “made it” in Hollywood and occasionally goes back to work in her native country. The actress says that although it appeared to be a seamless transition, it was not.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Bridge Summit in Abu Dhabi, Priyanka recalled a time early in her career when “six movies flopped back to back” and she felt forced to reinvent herself. She said that the big turning points in her 25-year career were motivated by “survival.” Career changes that later appeared intentional, according to the 43-year-old actress, “were never about choice” at the time. She remarked, “I was just trying to figure out what to do next.

According to Chopra, she has long opposed being limited to a single identity. She said that she has frequently had to “convince everyone” that she is capable of more. “As soon as you succeed at one thing, you’re put into a box,” she remarked.
