The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hailed Wednesday’s adoption of the State of Palestine’s resolution in the UN General Assembly. The UAE co-sponsored and supported the resolution.
UAE declared that it is evident from the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling that Israel’s occupation is unlawful and has to end. The General Assembly has welcomed the ICJ’s advisory opinion, and this resolution lays out a plan for the future.
The UAE stated, “We implore the Security Council to convert the advisory opinion into practical measures. The UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution on Wednesday that called for sanctions against Israel and demanded that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory end within a year. Israelis resisted this resolution with great force.
According to this opinion, Israel must cease its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories as soon as possible. The occupation began in 1967.
The resolution, which calls on Israel to “put an end without delay to its illegal presence” in the Palestinian territories “within a maximum of 12 months from the adoption of this resolution,” was upheld with 124 votes in favour, 14 against (including Israel, the United States, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Argentina), and 43 abstentions.
