The goal for both Canada and the United Arab Emirates when they play on Friday afternoon at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi is to simply win. Both teams are currently winless in Group D, and a victory would help them move up the standings.

Canada is in last place with a net run rate of -2.850 after suffering a 57-run crushing defeat at the hands of South Africa. UAE is one spot above them at -2.763 as the Blackcaps cantered to a 10-wicket victory, despite a strong batting performance against New Zealand that produced their highest-ever T20 World Cup total of 173.

The gap between Canada and the Proteas was shown by their baptism by fire versus South Africa. In Ahmedabad, their pacers had an overall economy rate of 11.1 and returned without taking any wickets. The spinners, on the other hand, provided some respectability. Ansh Patel, a left-arm wrist-spinner who was once a member of Baroda’s Indian domestic cricket team, was the only bright spot, taking three wickets.

Patel’s three-wicket haul, the first by a Canadian bowler in T20 World Cup history and one of his best performances in a young international career, raised the possibility that Canada would enjoy taking advantage of the typically spin-friendly conditions in New Delhi.
