US President Donald Trump and EU leader Ursula von der Leyen planned to meet in Scotland on Sunday to resolve a months-long transatlantic trade dispute that is nearing its end.
Trump has stated that he believes there is a 50-50 chance of striking an agreement with the European Union, and he has threatened to impose punishing tariffs on dozens of nations unless they reach a deal with Washington by August 1.
The EU is presently facing the possibility of a 30% across-the-board charge starting that date. Von der Leyen’s European Commission, which negotiates on behalf of the EU’s member countries, has been working diligently to rescue a trade partnership worth $1.9 trillion in goods and services annually.
Any agreement with the United Nations will require approval from all 27 member nations. EU ambassadors on a visit to Greenland were scheduled to meet Sunday morning to discuss the current discussions, as well as whether any agreement had been reached. The meeting between Trump and the EU president was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (1530 GMT) on Sunday at Turnberry, a posh golf club on Scotland’s southwestern coast that Trump owns.
The 79-year-old American leader said Friday that he intended to reach “the biggest deal of them all” with the EU. “I think we have a good 50-50 chance” of a deal, the president said, citing sticking points on “about 20 different things.
