Witnesses reported that protesters upset over Iran’s struggling economy staged a sit-in at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on Tuesday. As the rest of the bazaar closed, security authorities used tear gas to disperse the protesters.

With the rial hitting a record low on Tuesday, the protest at the Grand Bazaar, the center of Iran’s political and economic life for centuries, was the latest sign that the protests will likely continue. At least 36 people have already died as a result of the violence surrounding the protests, and officials have detained over 2,000 more, according to activists overseas. As Iran’s Central Bank sharply cut the subsidized exchange rates it provides to producers and importers for dollars, the situation was certain to get worse.

While directing a government probe into a protest-related event, Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian also hinted on Tuesday that the problem might be quickly escalating beyond officials’ authority.

As other neighboring stores closed on Tuesday, protesters took a seat in front of security personnel in the Grand Bazaar, a maze-like network of covered passageways and lanes, according to witnesses and online footage. People have also sat down in front of police during other protests after a picture of a man sitting by himself in front of security personnel went viral earlier.
