Tina Knowles had many happy childhood memories of listening to her mother recount their family’s multigenerational history while she sat beneath a pecan tree. This week, the mother of Beyoncé and Solange released “Matriarch: A Memoir,” sharing her personal journey with the world.

According to Knowles, 71, “Beyoncé and Solange have been busy working since they were little kids, and Kelly (Rowland)… I’ve told them stories, but I don’t even know if they really listened.” “Very few people are interested in hearing those stories about bygone eras when you’re young.

After reflecting on her mortality after her divorce from Mathew Knowles after three decades of marriage, Knowles started making voice notes on that history at the age of fifty-nine, putting in her contributions. Originally intended primarily for her grandchildren and potential great-grandchildren, the recordings finally served as the basis for the book.

Her enslaved great-grandmothers, her entrepreneurial spirit, Beyoncé and Solange’s childhood in Houston, her first marriage marred by infidelity, Destiny’s Child’s battle to land a record deal, and the overt racism her family faced while navigating a segregated United States are just a few of the many topics covered in the 432-page Oprah’s Book Club selection.
