To increase the capacity and efficiency of Sheikh Zayed Road, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai implemented three significant traffic enhancements. In order to maintain the emirate’s rapid urban growth and expansion, these actions are in line with RTA’s strategic plans to enhance the road network and mobility systems, guaranteeing efficient traffic flow in vital regions.

The Traffic and Roads Agency’s Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance, Abdullah Lootah, said: “The Sheikh Zayed Road is a key priority, and RTA focusses a lot of emphasis on improving the road network. With residential neighbourhoods and important business and financial icons like the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall surrounding it, it is a thriving economic centre and one of the emirate’s main thoroughfares.

Adding a lane for traffic going towards Al Manara and lengthening the merging lengths between Umm Al Sheif Street and Al Manara Street in the direction of Abu Dhabi constitute the first of these traffic improvements. By increasing vehicle capacity in this route by 30%, the improvement is expected to greatly improve entry and exit flows,” he continued.

The second upgrade entails changing the service road exit in front of the Shangri-La Hotel, which leads to the First Interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road, close to the Dubai Mall. Expanding the merging distances between the service road entry and the exit towards Al Safa Street and Dubai Mall is part of the work being done to alleviate traffic congestion at this vital site.
