US President Donald Trump’s contentious plan to force Palestinians out of the war-torn Gaza Strip was rejected on Wednesday by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.
In reaction to Trump’s proposal to annex Gaza, relocate its Palestinian residents permanently to other countries, such as Egypt and Jordan, and then turn the coastal region into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” the Arab League is set to convene an unusual conference in Cairo on March 4.
The “international community’s support and adoption of a plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip without displacing the Palestinian people , I repeat, without displacing the Palestinian people from their land, which they cling to, and their homeland, which they do not agree to relinquish,” Sisi said in a speech in Madrid prior to the event. Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is part of the future Palestinian state,” Sanchez, one of the most ardent supporters of the Palestinian cause in the European Union, concurred. The Socialist premier went on to say that their removal would be destabilising in addition to being unethical and against international law and UN resolutions.
