After tearing over Florida, where it caused 150 tornadoes and cut off electricity to over 3 million consumers, Hurricane Milton roared into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.

While Tampa was spared a direct strike, the storm added to the suffering inflicted by Helene and claimed at least ten lives. A senior government official stated Thursday that Hurricane Milton killed at least ten people in the southern US state of Florida, according to AFP.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed reporters, “We have reports that at least 10 individuals have lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Milton.

Authorities in 15 Florida counties, home to roughly 7.2 million people, issued mandatory evacuation orders, causing thousands of people to flee and about 80,000 to spend the night in shelters.

After reaching land, Milton was downgraded to a Category 2 storm approximately 90 minutes later. With maximum sustained winds of roughly 135 kph, the hurricane was a Category 1 storm by early Thursday and was departing the state close to Cape Canaveral.

Although there was extensive damage and the possibility of days of rising water levels, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that this was not “the worst-case scenario.”
