As he concluded his first year in office, President Lai Ching-te stated on Tuesday that although Taiwan wants peace and discussion with China, the government must keep bolstering the island’s defences.

As he celebrated his one year in office, Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, stated on Tuesday that while the island is ready to engage with China on an equal footing, it would continue to strengthen its defences.

Detested by Beijing and a fervent supporter of Taiwan’s sovereignty, Lai spoke of the necessity of “preparing for war to avoid war” and enhancing the island’s economic resiliency. At his inauguration, Lai pledged to oppose China and protect democracy, but he later stated that Taiwan was “willing” to speak with Beijing if there was “parity and dignity.

On Tuesday, China said it was “willing to engage in dialogue” with Taiwan, but only under certain restrictions. According to CCTV, Chen Binhua, a Beijing Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman, also attacked Lai’s “separatist stance” that encouraged “economic decoupling” across the Taiwan Strait.

In his address, Lai referred to peace as “priceless, he also stated that “we cannot have illusions” and promised to keep bolstering defence. Taiwan will “actively cooperate with international allies, shoulder to shoulder,” to attain the aim of peace, prepare for conflict to prevent it, and use the power of deterrence.

Since Lai assumed office, China, which asserts that Taiwan is part of its territory and has vowed to take it by force, has conducted many rounds of extensive military exercises surrounding the island.
