A massive explosion at a gas station in a suburb of Rome on Friday shook windows around the Italian city and injured about 30 people, the great majority of them minor injuries. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who visited the scene, reported that nine law enforcement personnel and some 20 other individuals were hurt, including one who was in critical condition.

A sports hall that was hosting a children’s summer camp was among the “enormous damage” caused by the explosion, which occurred at around 8:20 am (0620 GMT), prompting the evacuation of nearby buildings.

According to Gualtieri, an initial fire and a gas leak occurred during the refuelling process. When the explosion occurred, emergency personnel were already on the scene and evacuations were underway.

It was a powerful explosion. Michele Seco, a 23-year-old employee at the sports facility, told AFP, “I felt like my skin was burning.” A massive flame shot into the sky, followed by black smoke that spread across the Prenestino area of eastern Rome, according to mobile phone footage posted online.

AFP correspondents reported hearing the roar throughout the Eternal City, with windows trembling even farther afield. According to Fabio Balzani, the president of the sports facility, the first fire started at approximately 7.30 or 7.40 am, and if it had started later, the consequences may have been catastrophic.
