Liverpool’s Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, 28, died in a terrible automobile collision alongside his brother in Zamora in northern Spain on Thursday, according to a Spanish state-owned TV station, citing local firemen. Police told Reuters that everything pointed to the information being true, however they couldn’t yet formally confirm the names.

The regional fire service of Castille-Leon, which includes Zamora, stated on its website that a car crashed just after midnight on Thursday and erupted into flames, killing two males, ages 28 and 26.

Jota, who married on June 28, led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup. Jota joined Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and has scored 65 goals in 182 appearances in all competitions. In addition, he appeared 49 times for Portugal, winning the UEFA Nations League twice.
