Axios reported that the personal envoy of US President Donald Trump and the foreign minister of Iran were en route to Switzerland for negotiations. However, Israel’s deadly strikes in Lebanon on Saturday could potentially undermine a new ceasefire that is crucial to the resolution of the Iran conflict.
The talks, led by Steve Witkoff and Abbas Araqchi, aim to transform the interim 14-point pact signed this week into an enduring regional agreement to conclude the conflict that the United States and Israel initiated on February 28.
However, Israeli air strikes and drone attacks resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals in the southern region of Lebanon on Saturday, just hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hizbollah was implemented, according to Lebanese state media.
Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, addresses a gathering of ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from foreign nations in Tehran. The commencement of 60 days of US-Iranian negotiations to resolve disputes regarding Iran’s nuclear program and other complex issues is contingent upon a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. This agreement is essential for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the stabilization of global crude supplies.
