According to the government, India has repatriated about 300 of its citizens who were led to participate in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities in scam compounds after being enticed to many southeast Asian nations, including Myanmar, with false employment offers. This year, thousands of people have been released from cyber fraud centers near the border between Thailand and Myanmar as nations cooperate to combat the criminal networks.
India’s foreign ministry announced late Monday that Indian embassies in Thailand and Myanmar have worked with local authorities to ensure that 283 Indian nationals are repatriated by an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft from Mae Sot in Thailand today.”
To combat the fraud centers, Thailand made 100 arrests last week. The UN claims that criminal gangs have led hundreds of thousands of individuals to the centers, which make billions of dollars annually from illicit online operations.
To protect its nationals from these scams, India has advised them to “verify” the credentials of international employers and look up the “antecedents” of recruiting agencies and businesses before accepting job offers.
